Timbaland invented a production language all his own -- syncopated, polyrhythmic drums influenced by African and Indian rhythms, layered with unconventional sound design. His sample selections are chosen for texture rather than groove, and often processed beyond recognition.

Timbaland pitches and chops samples to the point of abstraction. His sample use is about timbral texture -- the grain of a voice, the creak of an old recording -- layered with his signature irregular drum patterns.
