2000s Sample Sources

The 2000s are the first decade where hip-hop itself became the dominant sample source for new music. Kanye West's chipmunk-soul era, the crunk movement, and the rise of Southern hip-hop production created a sound that the 2010s generation sampled extensively. 2000s records are now entering the classic sample canon -- young producers in the 2020s treat early Kanye, early Lil Wayne, and the Neptunes the way 1980s producers treated 1970s funk.

The 2000s also saw the rise of hyperpop's proto-forms, the blog era's eclectic digging, and the dominance of 808 bass. These textural elements are now being recombined in new contexts.
