1980s Sample Sources
The 1980s gave producers two distinct sample veins. The electro and drum-machine era -- Roland TR-808 records, early hip-hop, and electronic dance music -- produced mechanical percussion that loops cleanly. The quiet storm R&B vein -- Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, the Isley Brothers -- provided lush chord progressions, Rhodes piano, and synth pads that carry enormous emotional weight when flipped.
