Frequently asked questions
Short, direct answers. If something is missing, send it via the Feedback pill in the bottom-right and we'll add it.
Is Goat Music free?
Yes. Goat Music is free, ad-light, and there is no premium feed. A Pro tier with extra power-user features will exist later but the core product is free.
How is Goat Music different from Last.fm or Rate Your Music?
Last.fm is a scrobble graph; Goat Music is a curation surface. Reviews have their own URL with OG cards. Profiles read like magazine pages, not stat sheets. There is no algorithmic feed — discovery is via people whose taste you trust. RYM is a database with reviews layered on top; Goat Music starts from the album-as-statement.
Do I need a Spotify account?
You sign in with Spotify today. Apple Music + email-only signup are on the roadmap. If you are not ready to connect a streaming service you can drop your email on the launch page and we will write when it is ready.
Are you affiliated with Letterboxd?
No. Goat Music is an independent project. The Letterboxd-for-music framing is a positioning device because Letterboxd is the canonical example of a thoughtful curation product.
How do ratings work?
You rate albums on a 1–100 scale. The slider has decade chips so you can quickly anchor "this is in the high 80s" without dragging. Each rating can carry a written review with its own headline + permalink.
Can I make my profile private?
Yes. Account settings has a public/private toggle. Private profiles are excluded from the homepage activity strip, search, and sitemap — outsiders see a "this profile is private" splash.
Where do my reviews live?
Each review with a body has its own URL: goatmusic.me/@yourname/review/<UPC>. These are public on public profiles, share with a magazine-card OG preview, and accept reactions + threaded replies.
Do you store my listening history?
We pull a snapshot of your recent listening from Spotify so the timeline can show what you've been spinning. We don't sell or share that data. Privacy policy at /privacy has the full breakdown.
Is there an algorithm?
No. The homepage shows recent ratings from public profiles in chronological order. Discovery comes from following people whose taste you trust, charts curated editorially, and tier lists shared by other users — not a recommendation engine.
How do I report a problem or send feedback?
Use the floating Feedback pill in the bottom-right of every non-admin page. We read every submission. Anonymous OK.
