The Neptunes defined the sound of mainstream hip-hop and R&B from 1998 to 2006. Unlike most hip-hop producers, they largely avoided sampling in favor of live instrumentation. When they did sample, it was typically to create a specific retro texture.
The Neptunes sample sparingly. Their signature is spare, minimalist original composition -- minimal drums, specific synth tones, and unusual rhythmic phrasing. When they flip a sample, it's typically as a buried texture rather than the main loop.
