Marley Marl is credited with inventing the modern technique of sampling individual drum sounds from other records and reconstructing them into new patterns -- the foundation of all modern hip-hop production. He produced Juice Crew artists including MC Shan, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, and Roxanne Shante.
Marl samples drum sounds note-by-note, rebuilding the rhythm from scratch with programmed timing. Over those custom drums, he lays soul and R&B melodic loops. This technique, discovered accidentally in 1985, is the basis of every sample-based beat made since.
