Kanye West Samples

Chicago, IL -- Active 1996-present -- Born Kanye Omari West

Kanye West is responsible for two distinct sampling eras. His early career (2001-2007) pioneered chipmunk soul -- pitching soul vocals up to a helium-fast register and looping them under 808 drums. His later work (2007-2016) expanded into orchestral soul, gospel, and experimental territory. He is the most commercially successful sample-based producer in history.

Early Kanye pitches soul samples up 5-8 semitones and loops a single bar to exhaustion. Later Kanye is more cinematic -- dramatic strings, gospel choirs, and longer-form structural samples. He consistently returns to the same emotional wellspring: soul and gospel records that carry grief, triumph, or longing.
