Flying Lotus is the grand-nephew of John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane, and his production reflects his jazz lineage. He blends J Dilla-influenced sample manipulation with electronic music structure, noise, and psychedelic texture. His sample sources include his own family's recordings.
Flying Lotus layers samples with improvised live recordings, noise, and field recordings. He approaches sampling as collage -- creating temporal density and harmonic complexity from disparate sources.
