Music Term

What is a leitmotif?

Definition

A leitmotif is a recurring melodic, harmonic, or rhythmic theme associated with a specific character, object, idea, or emotion in an opera, film score, or dramatic work.

Leitmotif in music -- explained

The term (from German: leit = leading, motif = motif) is most associated with Richard Wagner's operatic technique. Wagner systematically assigned distinct musical phrases to characters (Siegfried, Wotan), objects (the Ring, the sword Nothung), and concepts (fate, love) in his Ring Cycle operas. When Wotan is mentioned or implied, his leitmotif sounds; when the Ring changes hands, its theme is heard. This creates a second layer of narrative that the audience can read subconsciously. The technique was adopted wholesale by Hollywood film composers: John Williams's Star Wars scores are built almost entirely on leitmotifs (the Imperial March for Darth Vader, the Force Theme, the Princess Leia Theme). Audiences do not need to consciously recognise leitmotifs for them to work -- the emotional association builds through repetition. In pop music, the concept applies loosely to samples or musical callbacks that carry thematic weight.

Notable examples of a leitmotif

1

The Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme) -- John Williams

Perhaps the most widely recognised leitmotif outside opera -- four notes sufficient to invoke the character and his threat.

2

Der Ring des Nibelungen -- Richard Wagner

The source of the leitmotif technique -- over 200 distinct themes associated with characters and concepts across four operas.

3

Schindler's List (Main Theme) -- John Williams

The solo violin theme is used as a leitmotif for hope and individual humanity against the mass horror of the Holocaust.
