What is a verse?
Definition
A verse is a recurring section of a song that advances the narrative or lyrical content, typically with different words each time it appears but the same or similar melody.
Verse in music -- explained
In most popular song structures, the verse is the storytelling engine of the song. It sets scenes, describes situations, and builds toward the emotional payoff of the chorus. Verses typically share the same chord progression and melodic contour, but the lyrics change with each repetition -- allowing the songwriter to develop an idea, introduce characters, or shift perspective over time. Unlike the chorus (which is designed for repetition and memorability), the verse is designed for information and forward momentum. Verse length varies widely: rock songs often use 8-bar verses, hip-hop often uses 16-bar verses, folk songs can have many stanzas with consistent verse length. The verse-chorus-verse structure is the dominant form in Western popular music and has been since Tin Pan Alley formalised it in the early 20th century.
Notable examples of a verse
Bohemian Rhapsody -- Queen
The opening verse is stark and unaccompanied, establishing the confessional tone before the song explodes.
Lose Yourself -- Eminem
Each of three extended 16-bar verses advances the protagonist's story across one night of a rap battle.
Big Yellow Taxi -- Joni Mitchell
Four short verses accumulate environmental grievances before the iconic chorus lands.
