What is a solo?
Definition
A solo is a passage for a single performer -- either unaccompanied or featured prominently above an accompaniment -- distinct from ensemble playing.
Solo in music -- explained
The solo can mean two different things: a single instrument or voice performing without accompaniment (a cappella singing, an unaccompanied violin partita by Bach), or a single instrument or voice performing as the featured voice above an accompanying ensemble. In jazz, the solo is the central form -- improvised melodic lines played over the chord changes while the rhythm section accompanies. Guitar solos in rock serve a similar function. In classical concerto form, the soloist alternates with the tutti orchestra in a formal conversation. Solos function as focal points within larger textures -- they draw the listener's ear to a single voice while the rest of the ensemble recedes. How a soloist shapes a solo (dynamics, tone, rhythm, phrase structure, interaction with the accompaniment) is the primary arena of individual musical expression in most genres. In pop production, 'the solo' is often a guitar break -- a section of typically 8-16 bars where the lead guitarist takes the melodic spotlight.
Notable examples of a solo
Comfortably Numb -- Pink Floyd
David Gilmour's extended guitar solo is frequently cited as the greatest guitar solo in rock -- melodic, restrained, and emotionally precise.
Giant Steps -- John Coltrane
Coltrane's saxophone solo over his own radical chord changes is a foundational document of modern jazz improvisation.
Eruption -- Van Halen
Eddie Van Halen's solo performance transformed guitar technique -- two-handed tapping became a standard technique overnight.
