What is a build?
Definition
A build (or build-up) is a structural section that increases energy, density, or tension progressively -- adding elements, increasing volume, or accelerating pace -- in preparation for a climax or drop.
Build in music -- explained
The build is the tension-gathering phase of the tension-release architecture that underpins most dance music and many other genres. In electronic music production, a build typically involves: adding layers (kick drum joining the texture, hi-hats intensifying, synthesizer leads entering), volume automation (a gradual rise toward the drop), pitch rises (a sweep filter moving up across the frequency spectrum), and rhythmic anticipation (a drum roll or snare buildup in the last 2-4 bars). The length of a build determines how satisfying the drop feels -- too short and the release feels unearned; too long and listeners become fatigued or confused. Film composers use builds to identical effect: the string crescendo before the creature reveal, the brass swell before the action payoff. In rock, the build often takes the form of a guitar-only section that adds drums, then bass, then vocals progressively.
Notable examples of a build
One More Time -- Daft Punk
The breakdown and build into the final chorus section demonstrates the classic electronic music tension-release arc.
Fake Plastic Trees -- Radiohead
The acoustic folk verse builds across the song, with the electric band entering progressively before the climactic final chorus.
Ode to My Family -- The Cranberries
The arrangement builds from solo voice to full band across the song's length, with each verse adding texture.
